Hello, and thanks for visiting! A couple of months ago a good friend nominated me in one of those Facebook challenges you may have seen doing the rounds - 7 black and white photos over 7 days from your ordinary life, excluding people and pets, posted without explanation. I accepted the challenge, and enjoyed the process so much that I was soon wondering how I could extend it. This blog is my answer. The photos won't always be in black and white - I've long understood how important colour is to me - but I plan to adhere to the other rules of the challenge for a full 365 days and, in doing so, tell the story of the next year in my life. Knowing how I struggle with discipline, especially self-discipline, I imagine this process will throw up quite a few challenges for me but hopefully that will all be part of the growing and learning process. There will be little or no explanation posted, though I'll be happy to chat in the comments, and I hope you find something here to enjoy.

  1. Goodness Me! This takes me back...looking at the fire though is it a repro type classroom..our desks were separate, with inkwells..and we did have a big black fire in the corner, with a big black funnel, going up towards and out of the ceiling and out on the roof...! And..corners were very popular to..HeHe! Especially if you misbehaved....! And..Yes! We had the pointed hat, with a 'D' on it...! :0).

  2. Hi Willie,

I had the same type of desk as you but no fire - only enormous great iron radiators that didn't work, underneath enormous leaded light windows with equally enormous gaps that let the snow in!!

This is the reconstructed school room at Tynham, on the coast by Warbarrow Bay.It's the village that was commandeered by the military in WW2 for practice manoeuvres. I've always been struck by how suddenly the idyllic lifestyle and community was turned upside down by war. But our visit at the weekend was particularly poignant coming just days after the awful school shooting in Florida - another (by all accounts) happy, learning community shattered without so much as a by-your-leave.

Thankful that my schooling, chilly as it was, never saw a crisis more dramatic than regular fire drill!
